Nielson Reunion 2010

As we were traveling along the top of Cedar Mountain toward the Girls' Camp where we to have our reunion, we came upon this large flock of sheep. A woman with a twin baby stroller started through the flock and told the cars to stay very close to the car in front so that the sheep didn't run between.

After bouncing over miles and miles of dirt, gravely road, we finally got the camp and set up.

We had line dancing and desserts at the pavilion then spent ouir first night on the mountain.

Early the next morning I was awakened around 7:00 a.m. by the chatter of these two grandsons - Marcus and Drake - who found embers in the fire pit so they started shaving pieces of their stick "swords" and got it smoking. I started fanning and blowing on it and we got a flame then put on kindling and eventually logs to make a nice fire on a chilly morning.

This is a view of our camp area. Our little tent is in the background and the camper and Barry & Kendra's tent is behind me.

Barry fixed our first breakfast - granola, yogurt, berries, bananas, tang, milk, boiled eggs, etc. It was delicious and didn't require a lot of work because the girls needed to get ready for their activity with children ages 6 to 10.

Friday morning the men did clean-up around camp and the women and girls tied 3 quilts to give to Humanitarian Aid.

This is the quilt furnished by Corrin's family.

The Lundins helped tie the quilt that I took.

Kendra and Barry had a treasure hunt for the children then the 2nd hour Trina, Kendra and Barry did crafts with the children.

Barry was a great hit with his balloon tying.

Our boys where busy with the paint and their projects.

Kendra is trying to perfect a paint blowing project.

Kira and some girls are making creations with miniature marshmallows and toothpicks

Trina has some fun water games that have all of the children wet. Even after she was done, they persisted in filling bags and buckets with water and throwing it at others.

Randie and Corrin are discussing the 3rd quilt provided by LuDeen.

Now isn't this an appropriate balloon for this little angel Eve?
Mitchell is looking on.

Both Garth and I got a lot of grandbaby holding time. Here is he keeping Alec Halterman happy.

Alec was a pretty good baby for being on his first camp out.

Drake is showing off his "octopus" hat that Barry made for him.

Marcus is in his "warrior" pose.

As the sun rose over our campground, we decided to put up our canopy over our table for shade during lunch and after.

Trina and Kendra are rehearsing the boys for their skits Friday evening.

I couldn't resist these pictures of Mitchell Harding and Tessa Halterman who were fascinated by the gravel and soft powdery mountain dirt.

Have you ever seen a cuter dirty face than this?

Friday evening we gathered at the pavilion for a combined meal

That evening we gathered at the amphitheater for skits. This first one was by the Corrin Nielson clan.

Corrin is in charge of the affair.

I loved this picture of Eve and Sheridan.

Then, of course, I had to have a picture of these grandsons. Only Drake realized I was taking it and had to acknowledge it.

The Lundin men did a skit about who had the most powerful "gun".

This is some of our bunch watching the snow

The dads are doing their bit with the babies. Barry has a very soothing influence on little Alec.

Trina and Kendra had the children do 3 little vignettes from my early life.

First was Janice, Corrin and Eric, spying on
Quinta and Dell when they came home from a a date.

The second was the "Sear's Catalogue" incident when Dell was dating Quinta. Sheridan was Dell and Drake was Grandpa Nielson who didn't know how to entertain young men who came to the house so he handed him a Sears' Catalog to entertain him. The boys did a good job.

The 3rd scene was when Fred was dating LuDeen and he came home from the army boot camp and brought a couple of his friends to our house. Dad had his barbells out on the back lawn and the guys were trying to show off.

When they found one too heavy, I walked out and lifted it up to show them it wasn't that heavy. Kira is portraying me here.

Here they are taking their bows -

Sheridan, Trina, with Mitchell in front, Caleb, with Trenton in front, Marcus, Kira, with her back to me is hiding the others from my view.

We were all supposed to take pictures but Corrin excused everyone. We got our family, though.

When it started to get dark, Jean Nielson invited us all back to the amphitheater to watch a Disney
movie, "Blackbeard's Ghost" - reminiscent of growing up in LaVerkin. She brought an old fashioned popcorn popper, a cotton candy maker and had twizzlers and cans of soda. When we got there we were each given 3 tickets good for 3 different treats. Jean, David and Daniel spent the time keeping everyone supplied.

The last event of the reunion was held Saturday morning. We all gathered at the pavilion for a slide show about the advent of our flag and some reminiscences about Quinta. She would have been 80 years old that day.

Then we met at the flag pole where the Scouts raised the U.S. Flag and led us in the pledge of allegiance and also brought out the Utah flag.

This is my sister, LuDeen, looking on.

Fred talked to us about the importance of our constitution then the meeting was adjourned

We made the rounds to tell people goodbye and packed up our camp and left the beautiful cool of the Kolob Mountain.

On our way out we paused to take this picture of the cabin that my dad built when I was around 11 years of age. I helped what I could on it. Some of my greatest memories are of the spring and fall each year when we came to this beautiful spot and opened and closed the cabin and could stay on this beautiful property during that time.

THE REUNION WAS GREAT! THOSE OF YOU WHO DIDN'T GO, REALLY MISSED OUT ON A SPECIAL EXPERIENCE.

Play Day at our Place

During the summer Marenda, Trina and Liz have set aside each Thursday for the 3 families to get together for summer activities.

The first was Trina's birthday luncheon.
This week they met at our house for a Play Day. We had hoped to put up the big pool but the weather forecasts were predicting storm and cooler weather.

Garth put in poles on the side of the garage where we put up a volley ball net (Only Sheridan wanted to play volley ball so I played with him and Garth, Shanda and Trina played a little). We couldn't coax Drake & Marcus away from the water guns we had bought for each of the children. We also purchased a new toddler pool that ended up being enjoyed by more than just toddlers.

As it turned out, it got hot enough for some fun playing outside. When it seemed we were all overheated and had had enough sun, I brought out the popsicles.

Addie, Kasen, Talia, Mitchell and Milo on the Quilt.

Then Addie,Talia, Kasen and Mitchell decided it would be fun to sit in the Wisteria arbor

Milo is enjoying his popsicle.

We had no more than finished enjoying our popsicles when we heard thunder and could see storm clouds gathering so we quickly gathered up everything and moved to the house.

Marcus and Drake are showing off their Tinker Toy creation

It's been fun having Shanda stay with us for a few days while Preston is traveling.

I made bread one day and Talia was my best helper.

First we ground the wheat, then we made the bread.

Nyah's Blessing Day - 6/6/10

Since we were in Arizona for the birth of Kendra's little boy - Alec Garth Halterman - the first Sunday in May, Marenda and Sam were good enough to put off Nyah's blessing until the first Sunday in June so we could be present.

Nyah Janice Brown on her blessing day.

Since this is the first granddaughter that bears my name, I had to have a picture with her.

It is also interesting to note that she wears the little dress that has been come to be the "blessing dress" in our family.
Nyah's great grandmother, Ruth Gubler Nielson, made this dress and all of our daughters, including Marenda, wore this dress on their blessing day.

Birthday Time May/June 2010

Marenda's birthday this year came in the middle of the week and Sam was busy with work. That weekend he had to go on a retreat with work so she came to our house with the 3 children and spent Friday night. As a surprise to her, I invited Deren & Trina and their families to join us for a birthday dinner.

And, of course, we had to put up a few decorations.

Marenda is posing here with her birthday cake.

Saturday morning Addie helped me make crepes with melted butter and powdered sugar and then rolled up. She was a great help

On June 3rd, Trina's birthday, we met at Marenda's place and had a patio luncheon for Trina.

Marenda's children - Kasen and Addie are enjoying the hammock

Our gift to Trina was the Happy Birthday banners made from cloth to her specification. They are nice because they are festive and can be used over and over and over again.

Trina with her daughter, Eve.

And, of course, a proud grandmother had to take pictures of her two newest granddaughters.

And Nyah Brown
