Happy Easter 2010

On April 4th, the families here met at our place for a lovely Easter meal. The children had to hunt for Easter eggs in our family room because it was too wet outside.
We loved the little Easter bunnies that were with us this year.

Nyah Janice Brown arrives - March 12, 2010

As time drew close for Nyah's birth, we had Marenda and the children over for lunch.

Kasen is creating his own salad man - mosty of cottage cheese - his favorite food.

"Humm. . . I think I like the arms and legs best at the sides"

Addie created a lovely girl salad.

Garth thought this was a cute picture showing his recent connection with his nose and a hard place.

Today we took Addie and Kasen to meet their little sister - Nyah who arrived this morning at 7:02 a.m.

This is one proud big sister

And, of course, the grandparents have to get in on the fun as well. She's a lovely little girl and makes 23 grandchildren for us - 11 grandsons and 12 granddaughters.

Time in Arizona Feb. 2010

I don't have a lot to post of our time with Kendra. We were too busy doing things to think of taking pictures.

This one shows Garth and Kendra painting the bookcases for the girls' room.

87 yards if 2 inch strips of cloth is a lot to serge on both sides and then ruffle down the middle
but the end result was beautiful.

One of the best things for me was "grandma" time with the three sweet children - Kira, Trenton and Tessa.

We ended our trip with a visit to Alice Lange who had just lose her husband - Dave - after 79 years of marriage. This, coupled with the loss of her daughter, Suzanne in January, was very hard for her.

Garth's Birthday - Feb. 2010

Just thought I would make you all drool with this yummy birthday breakfast that I fixed for Garth.

When we got to Arizona, Barry and Kendra and children put together a feast - grilled steak and potatoes etc. topped off with a yummy chocolate cake.

not sure where Tessa was when the picture was taken but she didn't usually want to be left out of anything.

My Sister's Funeral -1-24-10

The past week has been quite an emotional "trip" as we have helped prepare the casket, prepared music for the program and participated in the final "celebration" of my sweet sister - Quinta Nielson Beatty's funeral.

Quinta passed away on Wednesday, January 13th, after getting Pneumonia after Christmas. There was little expectation that she could or would pull through as she didn't want any interventions.

LuDeen called me to get some advice on how they should go about finishing off the inside of the casket that Quinta had my brother, Eric, build for her after her husband, Dell, passed away over 20 years ago. I told her that I really wanted to help and do this last service for my sister, so we left here Wednesday morning - January 20th - and traveled to Pine Valley where LuDeen lives. The fact that Utah and especially Southern Utah were being bombarded by storm after storm caused for a bit of concern traveling in and out of Pine Valley. They received over 2 feet of snow but we managed to do all that we needed to.

When we arrived on Wednesday, we practiced our song with Jeanette then she and Aunt Ardella left for home and LuDeen, Garth and I tackled the project. They had the casket taken to Pine Valley and we set things up in their very nice garage.

We started by putting the satin on the two ends and putting batting in to puff it out. We then did the two sides. The pneumatic stapler helped the project to move along quickly

After doing the sides we then started on the lids.

After fastening the top with the staple gun, I then ran a bead with the glue gun and put on a decorative trim.

The finishing touches were added by our covering a pillow with satin, making a throw to go over the pillow and making a small tied blanket that could go inside. We called this Quinta's "comfort" quilt.

And we were finally done and ready to deliver the casket to the mortuary.

With the back of Fred's pickup stacked with several feet of snow and more storm expected we weren't sure how we were going to get it down. By putting the seats in our Windstar down and pushing the passenger seat forward as far as it would go, we managed to get it in and got it delivered Thursday afternoon.

Friday, January 22nd was Eric's birthday so Fred and LuDeen, Corrin and Janice and their two daughters Christine (and her baby, Emma) & Camille, and Garth and I joined Eric and Marsha at Tim and Allen's Sports Grill in Hurricane for a birthday dinner then we all went to Toquerville to be at the viewing for Quinta and support her children.

Happy Halloween 2009

This is amazing! I am posting a blog the day after it happened.
Before we left for our trips, Marenda suggested that we host a Family Halloween party on Friday, October 30th then parents could just let their children do a little Trick or Treating Saturday evening.
Well, once you get me going on something, it seems there is no stopping me. My husband, Garth, referred to me several times as the "Energerizer Bunny". I had some fun party books and ideas and there were many I wanted to try so, although our girls suggested they could help with dinner, I told them I wanted to do it alone so that I could do a real Halloween buffet. Here is what came out of it. And like the kids, we will start with dessert first.

Eat-em-up Ghosts were formed from Rice Krispies and marshmallows - though I will be the first to admit that trying to make that sticky stuff stick together and do what you want it to is quite a challenge. When I had finally achieved somewhat of a ghost shape, I then dipped them in white chocolate and put eyes and mouth of melted chocolate.

These are delightful tasting cookies but don't they look gross?

Creepy Crawly is blue finger jello with gummy worms in it.

The eerie Eyeballs are made from lemon jello, cream cheese & pineapple juice. I had an egg holder that I was able to pour them into then Marenda helped me paint the iris' on with food coloring. They look terrible but are actually pretty tasty.

Cat Dip had sour cream with taco seasoning on the bottom and then had lettuce, tomatoes and cheese on top and I used bell peppers, olives, tomato and licorice to complete the picture

These are just our normal Deviled Eggs. I found that my small cookie scoop was great for filling the centers of the eggs.

Our Witches' Calderon held a cheese/salsa dip

Since we had several small children who were "grossed out" by the weird names on the food, Marenda came up with this one. In the bowl it doesn't look any different but you pick up a hot dog piece and it has spaghetti strings going through it. You can see this if you look closely.

These meatballs with a little sour cream and an olive gave a spooky impression and caused some to hesitate trying them.

This is nothing original, just the traditional Mac & cheese only it was Halloween shapes. Again, I served this mainly for the picky children.

This "Dinner in a Pumpkin" didn't turn out as it should have. The instructions didn't allow nearly enough cooking time. The pumpkin should have been soft enough to eat and it wasn't and the rice/ground beef dish inside was barely warm, but it looked impressive.

Everyone loves Little Smokies. I originally planned to wrap these in biscuit mixture and bake them but decided it was too much work for the time I had left. They were definitely a hit, though.

Garth and I worked hard to create an atmosphere for fun and craziness. We took all of the wall decorations out of the dining area then we hung crepe paper streamers on two walls, put up what decorations we had, including a huge spider, some hanging ghosts I made from cheese cloth and starch and some bats. I bough 3 yards of cloth at WalMart for $1.50 a yard for the table cloth and added cobwebs, which became annoying during the night as they kept grabbing onto us.
I was rather pleased with the table spread. I printed out the name cards to add to the festiveness.

Here are two tired parents ready to receive our guests.

Liz & Deren brought their traditional dry ice root beer and it put the final touch on the evening and tasted wonderful.

With food enjoyed, we had the children line up for pictures in their costumes.

Sheridan is an impressive Greek warrior. He made his helmet from paper mache, Drake was a Time Traveler and he wore a helmet with all kinds of time pieces and a calculator on it - also created by himself. Marcus was the Mad Scientist, Caleb a cute skeleton, Addie a beautiful mermaid, Kasen a cute baby lion and Mitchell a handsome frog

After the party, the children gathered in the little room under the stairs and told scary stories - or so I am told.

Trina informed us that she didn't dress up but "baby" did so we had to have a picture of grandparents and baby - and got the bonus of having our lovely daughter in the picture, too.

And that was the end of our party. We had lots of fun and will have a lot of pleasant memories for years to come. Happy Halloween everyone.
