Our Time In Arizona & Kira's Baptism & Birthday

I had intended to get to this right away after returning home but this is the first chance I have had to get it done.

Our final trip of April was to Arizona. Because Mother Nature knew that we were going to 100 degree temperatures, she sent us off with a lovely, wet snow storm.

We left for Southern Utah on April 17th. We stayed at "Mother's" house in LaVerkin and I fixed a meal and invited my sisters - Quinta & LuDeen (& Fred), my brother - Eric (and Marsha) and my aunt Ardella. We agreed at that time to meet at the house on the 26th to let each person pick the things of Mother's that they wanted and then clean out the rest the next day.

On Saturday morning we drove to Prescott, Arizona and visited with some of our friends there then arrived at Phoenix by 6:30 that evening.

We spent the next week helping Kendra with things around the house, attending Kira's baptism and attending her party.

After doing some planning on Sunday, I set up my sewing in the living room on Monday and started to work.

My first project was to sew up a cover for the kitchen window seat cushion.

It took all three of us - Garth, Kendra and me - to wallpaper the long sloping wall. Kendra found some very nice flocked wallpaper. At first we used wall compound to fill in any of the low spots in the wall texturing. When that was smooth, Garth put on two coats of wall sizing.

It then took all three of us to handle the long stips of paper and get it applied and matching just right.

(I was right in there working, too, but wanted to get some pictures - for the record.)

This is how the finished produce looked

Garth occupied his time building two shelving units for Kendra to use to organize her loft area. This one goes under the computer desk and he built a larger one to go in front of the window and serve as a window seat.

My big job was to make a slip cover for this couch.

After several days' work, I finally made the last stitches on this and put it all together.

Kira's birthday was on Wednesday but we celebrated on Saturday when she was also baptized.

Kendra is working on the cake here.

On Saturday, the Haltermans came and joined me as we put together a salad bar for the meal following the baptism.

When you get this crew together - things are sure to happen!

Left to right: Kristin, Becky, Amber & Mikelle & that's me at the end.

On Kira's batptism day we gave her a personal journal to record her feelings on this special day.

Before the baptism - Kira (in the same dress her mother was baptized in) and her father, Barry.

Following the baptism Kira is again with her father but this time she is wearing the special white dress that I made for her for her birthday.

Kira, Barry, Trenton, Kendra and Tessa Halterman after the baptism of our sweet granddaughter.

Back at the house, it is time to party!

The theme for the party was "Rainbows" . If you look carefully you will notice that the salad bar is arranged in rainbow colors: Red-ham, radishes, tomatoes; orance - cheese & carrots; yellow -yellow peppers and eggs; green - celery, cucumbers & snap peas; blue - blueberries; purple - purple cabbage & purple onion; It was finished with croutons, bacon bits and mushrooms

The bread was rainbows shaped breadsticks

We made jello salad of 6 colors of jello starting with purple, blue, green, yellow, orange & red.

Kira and two of her friends are looking at her cake - a book with the words from the primary song, "I Like to Look at Rainbows".

You will notice rainbow cookies & rainbow colored soda pop.

After a scripture based treasure hunt, Kira opened her gifts under this helium balloon rainbow. You can't see it but they were tied to jars filled with different colors of candy which were later given to the guests to take home.

All in all - it was a great party and we were very privileged to be there!! Thanks Kendra & Kira

Our Trip to Michigan

What fun to be with our family in Michigan for a few days!

With Liz's help, we got to the airport in good time and had a good flight to Detroit on April 2nd. We spent the weekend with Thayne and his family.

Here Garth is playing a game of Stratego with Paxton. He loves games.

Dana is doing her favorite thing and the thing we saw her doing most of the time we were there - reading whatever book she can get a hold of.

Serena and Blair joined us for Sunday dinner and the last session of General Conference then we traveled to Waterford for 5 days with Serena and Blair.

Serena had a lot of things she hoped to get done. After painting some ceiling areas in the hall, she and Garth took everything out of the Master Bedroom closet. Then painted the closet ready to put new Closet Maid closet accessories in. After several trips to Home Depot and a lot of consultation and discussion, the closet finally took shape.

While Garth was working on the closet, Serena worked on cleaning up in the basement. Once the sewing area was cleared, I sewed up a cover for the futon and made two large and two small pillows for the futon. The insides are from the pad and cover that went on an outdoor swing but the covering had rotted. I used the large sheets of batting found inside. I sewed them together and filled them mostly with batting I pulled apart.

Serena is enjoying the new look in her office.

I did a lot of mending and made
Serena a new dress and made a new pouf pillow cover out of softer fabric. It has yet to be stuffed.

The last project was to re-cain Serena's rocking chair seat. I had never done this before but decided - with the materials and a good instruction book - I could tackle it.

The finished seat after many hours of work

On Friday, Serena and Blair took us back to Ypsilanti to be with Thayne, Jenny and family.

We started by having an Easter Egg hunt on Friday while Serena and Blair were there.

Shelby

Paxton & Dana had fun finding the eggs.

Here Serena is watching while the children look over their finds.

The next project - after helping Thayne pick up all of the trimming limbs from pruning his fruit trees, the next project was to spike, reseed and roll the acre of lawn.

Thayne is spreading seed and Garth is driving the tractor with the spikes on

Paxton joined his grandfather when he was rolling the lawn to help plant the seeds.

On Easter Sunday we took a walk in the Wastana County Rolling Hills Park that borders their neighborhood.

After a lovely Easter meal, the three couples enjoyed visiting

Jenny and Thayne, Janice (that's me) and Garth, Blair and Serena.

HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!

A sweet Interlude With Some of Our Children & Grandchildren

It's always a special time when we can spend some time with our children and grand
children.

In March we were privileged to attend a play put on by Sheridan's class - Shakespeare's "A Comedy of Errors". Sheridan played the part of one of the twin brothers who had been separated in a storm and didn't know the other existed. The children did an exceptional job and the set was well done.

After the funeral we were privileged to have Shanda and her children with us for a few days before Preston came for them.

Talia is a lot like her mother - always coming up with interesting, fun things to do. She thought climbing in the clothes dryer was just the right place for her to be.

Here she is trying out the wastebasket for size.

Milo is quite the charming little guy

and when he sees you looking at him, he puts on his little shy face.

The Hardings joined us for Family Home Evening. Trina is giving her boys the lesson while the rest look on.

Preston, Shanda and Milo are watching.

As are Caleb and Guy.
